Made with just 5 ingredients, these cheesy breadsticks are an irresistible appetizer or side dish that's always the first to disappear! Start with pre-made or homemade pizza dough brushed with garlic herb butter, then load it up with mozzarella cheese. Bake until crispy and the cheese is extra melty.
Calling these homemade cheesy breadsticks delicious is an understatement, especially when paired with homemade marinara sauce. Their slathered in a rich garlic herb butter, piled high with melty mozzarella, and baked to perfection.
Whether you're serving them as an appetizer or a side to slow cooker meatballs or lasagna soup, these cheesy breadsticks are guaranteed to disappear QUICK.
You'll Love These Cheesy Breadsticks
- Soft and fluffy on the inside, with a slightly chewy exterior
- Delicious on their own, or dipped in pizza sauce
- Extra flavorful from the garlic herb butter brushed on the dough before and after baking
- Easy to make, perfect for kids to join in and help!
Grab These 5 Ingredients
- Pizza Dough: You can use homemade pizza dough or store-bought, either is fantastic!
- Mozzarella Cheese: Any type of cheese you love will work. I usually grab shredded mozzarella cheese and add some shredded provolone too!
- Butter: 4 Tablespoons of unsalted butter is just enough to coat the pizza dough before and after baking.
- Garlic Powder: The garlic adds wonderful flavor to the breadsticks. The recipe calls for garlic powder but you can also use fresh minced garlic too.
- Herbs: In addition to the garlic, the dried herbs add more flavor. Italian seasoning is ideal as it has a mixture spices like parsley, oregano, and basil. Though you could use any combination.
#1 Time Saving Tip
Most grocery stores carry freshly made pizza dough at the bakery. If yours doesn't, you can use canned crust like Pillsbury. (Not sponsored, just genuinely like their products– I use their crescent sheets in quick cinnamon rolls and cheese danish).
How To Make Homemade Cheesy Breadsticks
Once your pizza dough is ready, there's only a few steps. As a shortcut, I often use fresh made store-bought pizza dough or Pillsbury Pizza Crust (Classic).
- Shape: Shape the dough into a rectangle. Depending on the dough used, it will want to be round, so do the best to shape into a rectangle that's around 9x13 inches.
- Top: Brush the dough with melted butter, garlic, and Italian seasoning. Then, sprinkle with a generous amount of cheese. The more cheese... the better!
- Bake: Bake the breadsticks at a high temperature so the cheese melts evenly and the edges get crisp. Once finished, brush the crust with reserved butter.
Cheesy Breadsticks (Made With Pizza Dough)
Description
Ingredients
- 1 (12 ounce) pizza dough
- 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425ºF. On a lightly floured surface or on a piece of parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, roll the dough out into a 9x13-inch rectangle. If you're using homemade/pre-made, the dough will want to be round, so do your best to shape it.
- Combine the butter, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning together in a small bowl. Brush over the dough, reserving a small amount to brush after the breadsticks come out of the oven. Cover evenly with shredded cheese.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. If desired, like pictured, turn the oven to broil for the last minute to brown the top. Brush the crust with reserved butter mixture.
- Slice vertically in half and into strips (about 16-18 total breadsticks). Serve plain or with marinara sauce. Cover and store leftovers and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Notes
- Make Ahead Instructions: Depending on the pizza dough used, you can make it ahead of time and freeze it. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and allow to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes before using.
- Pizza Dough: You can use homemade, store-bought (fresh made) pizza dough, or even packaged Pillsbury Crust. I've used each and they all are fantastic!
- Cheese: Use any type of cheese that you prefer. Mozzarella is usually what I use and sometimes toss in shredded provolone.
